How to register a custom domain name from Format

Basic and Monthly Plan subscribers can purchase (register) and connect a custom domain name directly with Format.

About Format domains

Format is a reseller of Tucows domains. Renewing the domain name for subsequent years is $30 USD per year. Domain renewals and purchases are non-refundable.

As well, because our domains are provided via a third party, there is no user-facing DNS panel. If you require changes made to your domain's DNS records, please reach out to our Success Team via live chat or email so that we can make these changes on your behalf.

A custom email address via Google Workspace can also be added for US$100 per year. See our custom email guide.

Buy a domain name

  1. Click Settings from the lower-left sidebar

  2. Click Domain and Email

  3. Click Buy Domain

  4. Or upgrade to a Pro Yearly or Pro Plus Yearly plan to get a free domain name

Choose your new domain name

  1. Type in the search field to display a selection of custom domain names below

  2. Select one available $30 USD / year domain name

  3. Domains that are similar may be shown or 'Unavailable'. If too close, consider a different name.

.com , .net, .org, .ca, .xyz and .me top-level domains (TLDs) are available.

Registration details

  1. Check that the domain name is exactly what you wanted (no changes are possible after registering)

  2. The domain renewal date will be displayed. Auto-renewal is enabled by default, and your payment method will be charged shortly before this date

  3. Enter your name, this is required and must be a correct, legal name

  4. Add your address details accurately

  5. Add your email address and phone number

  6. Read the legal fine print

  7. Read and agree to our Terms of Service. By clicking Complete Purchase, you are agreeing to our Terms of Service. This is a requirement for registering a domain

  9. Click Complete Purchase after you have double-checked that all details are correct

.ca Domain Names

  1. If registering a .ca domain, you must choose a legal group you belong to

  2. CIRA Registrant Agreement must also be read and agreed to (for .ca domains).

  3. Select I agree

Read and agree to our Terms of Service. By clicking Complete Purchase, you are agreeing to our Terms of Service. This is a requirement for registering a domain.

Click Complete Purchase once you have double-checked that all entered details are correct.

Domain purchased

  1. Notification that the domain selected has been successfully purchased

  2. Click Go to Domain Settings to complete

Domain Settings

  1. Return to the Domain and Email panel

  2. New custom domain shown

  3. Needs Email Verification: Please check your email to verify this address within 14 days of registering. If you don't see the email, check your spam folder

  4. The domain is set to auto-renew to ensure you do not lose the domain or any services

  5. Format address (what also appears in the top-left corner of your Dashboard under the FORMAT logo)
