Theme updates keep your site stable, optimized, and up to date with our latest feature releases.
Updating your Theme
It's important to ensure your theme is using the most up-to-date version available. An up-to-date theme means that your site will be optimized for the most recent browser versions, as well as ensure that your site receives any important bug fixes and gains access to new features and feature improvements.
Before following the steps outlined below, please review the Possible Issues section of this article, located further down this page.
To check if your site's theme has an update available, you'll need to navigate to your account Dashboard:
- Navigate to your Dashboard
- Click Review Changes on the yellow update banner. If no banner is present, your site is already up to date
You'll then be brought to the following page:
- A list of updates will be noted on this page, including bug fixes and new features
- You can click Back if you do not want to update your theme
- You can click Preview Changes if you would like to proceed with the update. This change is not final at this point, and you will have another chance to cancel the update after clicking this
Once you select Preview Changes, you will be brought to the Design tab:
- A warning will display, noting that you are previewing the updated version of your site's theme. You can also click Cancel Update here if you no longer wish to proceed with the update
- You can click Clear Changes if you no longer wish to proceed with the update
- You can click Save Changes if you wish to proceed with the update
Please note: Once you click Save Changes, you will not be able to revert to an older version of your site's theme. If you experience issues with your site's design or functioning after updating your theme, please reach out to our Success team via live chat or email at info@format.com.
Possible Issues
Occasionally, if your site's theme is very out of date (i.e. if you have not updated your theme in several years), you may experience technical issues and be unable to update your theme following the steps outlined in this article. If you are unable to update your theme for any reason, please reach out to our Success team so that they can assist.
It's possible that custom code added to your site may be lost in an update, depending on how you have added this code to your site. If you are using custom code (CSS, HTML, etc.) in your site's Advanced Code Editor, we recommend copying and pasting all custom code into a safe place before proceeding with the update. As well, please see our article on using the Advanced Code Editor for information on how to ensure your code is preserved across theme updates or changes.
Custom code in HTML Embed sections on Custom Pages will not be lost when updating your theme.
