Adding an Instagram feed

Show your Instagram feed and images on a Custom Page and how to re-connect a disconnected Instagram account or remove.

You can add to an existing Custom Page (like 'About' or 'Contact') or create a new Custom Page

It is only possible to show image posts from one Professional/Business Instagram account per site.

As of Thursday 28 November 2024 a Professional Instagram Account is required to connect, these are free and easy to create (or convert your existing Personal Instagram account to), follow the steps below.

Reels / Stories and Live feeds will not display in the Instagram Feed.

Convert Personal to Professional Instagram Account

From your Instagram account, go to your Profile and click on the upper right corner. Click Settings and privacy, then Account type and tools

  1. Switch to a Professional account. Pick a category that best describes your business, then select Business. You're all set, you've got an Instagram business account.

Add Instagram Section to existing Custom Page

  1. Click 'Media'

  2. Scroll down to 'Instagram Feed' and hover

  3. Click 'Add Section'

Log in to your Instagram Account

  1. Login to your Instagram account

  1. Add your Instagram Username

  2. Add your Instagram Password

  3. Click 'Log in'

  1. Personal message showing Format requests:

  2. Access your profile information (required)

  3. Access your media

  4. Blue 'tick' is enabled by default

  5. Click 'Authorize' to complete the connection

Change Instagram feed display

  1. Click on the Instagram section and a toolbar will appear above.

  2. Images per row (2–4)

  3. Images count (1–16)

  4. Access Instagram Settings

  5. Save Changes

Managing a Disconnected Instagram Account

On 31 March 2020, Instagram changed how all external providers (like Format) are able to connect to their services.

This has meant any existing Instagram feeds have been disconnected and will now require you to reconnect your Instagram feed to your Format site.

You will see the following message:

  1. Message advising disconnection from your Instagram account

  2. Log in to Instagram to reconnect

  1. Add your Instagram Username

  2. Add your Instagram Password

  3. Click 'Log in'

  1. Personal message showing Format requests:

  2. Access your profile information (required)

  3. Access your media

  4. Blue 'tick' is enabled by default

  5. Click 'Authorize' to complete the connection

Click on the Instagram section and a toolbar will appear above.

  1. Click the 'wrench' icon to activate the Instagram Settings pop-up panel

  2. Instagram username and profile image are displayed

  3. 'Manage Access'

  4. 'Disconnect Account'

Changing your account access will affect all pages that have an Instagram feed.

Only one Instagram feed can be displayed per Format portfolio site.

Deactivate Instagram Feed

  1. Click 'Apps and Websites'

  2. Select 'ACTIVE' panel

  3. Under Format app, click 'Remove'

You can now add a different Instagram account.

Error Message from Meta/Instagram

If, after you have tried to connect (or re-connect) your Instagram account, you may see an error message of:

{"error_type": "OAuthException", "code": 400, "error_message": "Your activity off Meta technologies is currently turned off."}
